Today I combine two family history writing challenges: My 16 (stories about my 2x Great Grandparents) and the Ancestral Women 31-Day Challenge.
ELLEN DEAN, 1823-1910, my 2 times Great-Grandmother
Ellen Dean was born on 4 April 1823 in Darrington, Yorkshire, the daughter of William Dean and Ann Butcher.1 Darrington is a small village southeast of Pontefract. Ellen, sometimes called Helen, came to Tasmania, Australia as an assisted immigrant on board the Elizabeth and Jane arriving in Launceston on 9 February 1843.2 Henry Reed, merchant and landowner of Launceston paid for the shipload of assisted immigrants to come to Tasmania on the Elizabeth and Jane and then claimed the immigrant bounty back from the Government. Ellen is listed as a domestic servant aged 19.3 On board were her two future husbands: James Ordish, a tailor aged 26 and Charles Teeson, a gardener aged 22 years.4 James’ sister Margaret Ordish, a domestic servant aged 29, was also on board. They were all from Yorkshire.
Ellen and James Ordish married on 8 August 1843 at Trinity Church, Launceston in the presence of Charles Teeson and Margaret Ordish.5 Ellen and James’ daughter Mary Jane Ordish was born on 14 June 1844 at Launceston, Tasmania.6 Around 1846, they all moved across to Victoria where Charles Teeson and James Ordish were partners in a farm at the River Plenty, Port Phillip, Victoria.
Dissolution of Partnership,
THE co-partnership hitherto existing between the undersigned as farmers, on the River Plenty, in the neighbourhood of Melbourne, under the firm of Ordish and Teeson, has been this day dissolved by mutual consent.
Dated this 17th February 1848.
JAMES ORDISH,
CHARLES TEESON.
Witness
Francis J. Stephen.
CAUTION.
I, James Ordish, who retain possession of the farm, hereby intimate to the public, that Charles Teeson, my late partner, having absconded with my wife, I will not be answerable for any debts which she may contract from this date.
JAMES ORDISH.7
Ellen left her husband. Charles Teeson, Ellen and her daughter Mary Jane Ordish went to Sydney. Mary Jane was raised as Charles’ daughter. Ellen and Charles had a son Charles Randolph Teeson on 15 May 1851 at Camperdown.8 Charles and Ellen finally married on 15 September 1874.9 Charles died on 19 November 1874 and is buried at St Peter’s Anglican Church Cemetery.10 Ellen Teeson died on 8 May 1910 at 98 Enmore Road, Marrickville and is buried in the Church of England section of Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney.11
James Ordish had gone to England in 1855 and married before returning to Victoria with his new wife.12 He died in 1867 at Brunswick, Victoria after walking into an unfenced waterhole while intoxicated.13
Ellen was remembered by her grandchildren for her knowledge of the latin names of plants. Perhaps picked up during her years with Charles Teeson who was a gardener.
